In 1859 Stargard-Posener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft founded railway stock repair
works in Stargard (now Stargard
Szczeciński) in Western Pomerania, which later grew
up to become a large industrial establishment, second in the region only to Vulcan shipyard. In 1945 they were
taken over by PKP and re-named ZNTK Stargard.
Apart from repairing locomotives and rolling stock, they also built railcars
(type 15WM, 555 examples in all) and various machines for track works, like
tampers, track layers or lining machines. ZNTK
Stargard went bankrupt in 2000 and was later
transformed into Zakład Pojazdów Szynowych (ZPS –
Rail Vehicle Works), a division of Warsaw-based company. In
2012 ZPS delivered a single two-axle
switcher designed and built for Warsaw underground. Designated LM-400.00 (LM
stands for ‘lokomotywa manewrowa’,
or switching locomotive), it is powered by a Caterpillar C15 diesel engine rated at 545 hp
and fitted with hydraulic transmission. LM-400.00 has been designed for the
underground vehicle gauge and features angular body with characteristic,
triangle-shaped engine cover. It is based at the Warszawa Kabaty
depot. In theory, this type could find a more widespread use, as a
replacement for older and obsolete medium-power switchers. Until now, however, no more orders have followed. Main
