KRB No. 32 ‘Mautern’ (Sigl / Wiener Neustadt 669/1869), later kkStB 3416 and
then 34.16, withdrawn in 1928. Location and date unknown. Source: www.commons.wikimedia.org. |
Since
mid-1860s Austro-Hungarian private railways ordered several types of freight
locomotives with the 0-3-0 axle arrangement. They were built against
individual orders and, despite similar appearance, differed in many details.
Most of these operators were later absorbed by state railways kaiserlich-königliche österreichische Staatsbahnen (kkStB) and their locomotives were
classed in accordance with their system then in use. This explains why kkStB had many
classes of 0-3-0 freighters, of which some numbered just a few examples. After
the war a number of these locomotives were taken over by PKP and as many as fourteen class designations were intended for
them. In many cases this was only formal, as most of these engines, due to their
obsolescence, were withdrawn before new system came to use in 1926.
Assignment of Polish designations to kkStB classes is still subject to dispute and data from
various sources are sometimes contradictory. This refers also to class Th13 –
probably Austro-Hungarian class 34. On
January 1, 1884, k.k. privilegierte Kronprinz Rudolf-Bahn (KRB), founded in 1868, was absorbed by
kkStB
together with their motive power and rolling stock. Their most numerous
locomotive type was a 0-3-0 freighter with outer frame and Stephenson valve
gear, built between 1868 and 1873 by Sigl (Wien and Wiener Neustadt works), Maffei and Mödlinger Lokomotivfabrik. In all, 43 examples
were delivered, numbered 2 through 74 and 98 through 108 (even numbers only)
and given individual names. With kkStB they were numbered 3401 through 3443, in 1905
re-numbered 34.01 through 43. In the 1890s they were modernized, with boiler
pressure increased from 9 to 10 bar; two types of boilers were fitted,
differing in grate dimensions and number of flues. In 1901, No. 3429 (ex KRB No. 58, Maffei 760/1871) was rebuilt into a tank locomotive and re-numbered
6501. Five were withdrawn between 1910 and 1916. The rest were divided
between BBÖ (eighteen, withdrawn
between 1928 and 1929), PKP (nine),
Italian FS (three, classed 194 and
withdrawn between 1924 and 1925), ČSD
(one, withdrawn in March 1924) and the railways of the Kingdom of Serbs,
Croatians and Slovenians (six). The latter operator kept them in use until
1932. Polish 34s were all written off before 1924, so – if class designation
Th13 was in fact intended for them – they were never actually re-numbered. No
locomotive of this type has been preserved. Main technical data

Two boiler versions.
