KkStB
464.02 ‘Auffenberg’ (Krauss
Linz 6520/1911), operated by BLB;
location and date unknown. According to some sources, this locomotive was
taken over by PKP and
designated TKh16-1. Source: TK

Yet
another ‘class that never was’: TKh16. According to some sources, this
designation was intended for a single kkStB class 464 tank locomotive. Whether it was actually
assigned is a different story. On
July 1, 1889, Bukowinaer Lokalbahnen
(BLB) in Eastern Galicia, which
commenced operation in 1884, were taken over by Austro-Hungarian state
railways kkStB,
but retained some degree of autonomy. In 1909 it purchased a 0-3-0 tank
locomotive for mixed traffic from Krauss
Linz (6198/09), which was given the individual name ‘Pflaum’.
Two more engines of the same type followed later: Krauss Linz 6520/1911 ‘Auffenberg’ and
6776/1913 (no individual name). These three locomotives were given kkStB service
numbers 464.01 through 03. They featured inner frame and Allan valve gear and
ran on superheated steam, which was rather uncommon with mixed traffic
locomotives built for Austro-Hungarian local railways. After
the war 464.01 and 464.03 were taken over by Romanian Căile Ferate Române (CFR)
and retained their original service numbers. They were withdrawn at the Paşcani depot in 1936 and 1937, respectively. The fate of
the 464.02 is unclear. According to some sources (e.g. ITFR) it was taken by Austrian troops on their withdrawal from
Ukraine and transferred to PKP in
May 1919. Service designation TKh16-1 was supposedly intended for this
engine. Other sources (e.g. TK) suggest
that it possibly fell into Russian hands and its further fate is unknown. Class
TKh16 is not mentioned in Charakterystyki parowozów (Steam
Locomotive Characteristics) by A. Czeczott,
issued by the Ministry of Transport in 1927. Thus, if this locomotive
actually served with PKP, it is
unclear why it was withdrawn after less than sixteen years in use. It seems
that, until some hitherto unknown documents are revealed, this question shall
remain open. Main technical data
